During our Service
Nursery, infant through 4 years, 9:15am-11:00am
Pathways is pleased to once again offer professional nursery care for our youngest members! Our bright and lively nursery is equipped with numerous books and toys to spark the imaginations of babies and toddlers alike. The nursery is located directly behind the coffee area. As you go down the hall, it is the first door on your left.
Since the nursery care worker is a paid position, a small love offering is asked of parents who use the nursery to offset the nanny's costs.
Community Hour, ages 5 to 11 years, 10:00 am—11:00 am
Children are always welcome in the worship services, but most of our children prefer to socialize and play instead. Children ages 5-11 can participate in a supervised Children's Community Hour. During this time the children can play together and do fun activities such as board games, creating with Legos, playing with our large collection of toys, and also doing art projects under the supervision of our wonderful child care volunteers. Children's Community Hour takes place in the Community Room which is located directly across from the sanctuary.
What if my child wants to stay with me during the service?
Children at Pathways are free to sit with their parents or guardians during part or all of the Common Ground service. Pathways also welcomes and encourages its nursing mothers. If your child needs additional activities during the service, there are coloring sheets, crayons, and books for quiet play in the sanctuary just for them. These items are located in the back of the sanctuary in the bookcase next to the audio-visual station. Please see an usher if you need help locating these materials for your child.
After the Service
Nursery care, Infant through age Four, 11:30am -12:30pm
Infants, toddlers, and young preschoolers are invited to stay in the nursery with our profesional nanny while their parents or guardians attend adult religious education classes. The nursery is full of age-appropriate toys, books, and videos to keep our very youngest children engaged during religious education. A snack will be provided. A small love offering is asked of parents using the nursery to help offset the costs of the nanny.
Spirit Play, ages 4 through 2nd grade, 11:30 am —12:30 pm
A program where children begin to explore questions such as “Where did we come from? What is our purpose?” It is a Montessori-style approach to Sunday school, which presents Unitarian Universalist foundational stories, fables, the Promises, Sources, Beginnings and Endings, and Sacred Places. For more information about this unique curriculum, see http://www.spiritplay.net
Pathfinders, Grades 3 through 6, 11:30 am —12:30 pm
As their spiritual understanding deepens, our Pathfinders explore their faith through age appropriate curricula. This year our curriculum will be Timeless Themes: Stories from the Hebrew and Christian Bible. This curriculum introduces children to religious literature which is central to our culture and to our heritage as Unitarian Universalists. http://www.uuabookstore.org/productdetails.cfm?PC=745
Our Whole Lives, Grades 7 through 9, 11:30 am - 1:00 pm
Our Whole Lives (OWL) is a series of sexuality education curricula. OWL helps participants make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health and behavior. It equips participants with accurate, age-appropriate information in six subject areas: human development, relationships, personal skills, sexual behavior, sexual health, and society and culture. OWL helps participants to clarify their values, build interpersonal skills, and understand the spiritual, emotional, and social aspects of sexuality. Parental permission required before attending OWL. http://www.uua.org/religiouseducation/curricula/ourwhole/
High School, Grades 10 through 12, 11:30 am - 12:30 pm
Discussion, service and community are the core of our youth program. Programming focuses on spirituality and Unitarian Universalism and how they can use it in their lives in high school and the issues they face. In previous years, students have worked with their youth advisors on projects such as a youth section of the Pathways website, fund-raising projects, or multi-media presentations for our Common Ground service. They may serve on the worship team helping with Common Ground or Children’s Chapel. It is not all work; they will also hang out, build relationships and explore in their own way the central challenges of their lives.
Adult Religious Education 11:30 am – 12:30 pm
We also have a variety of adult religious education programming. Classes range from the spiritual, to studies of Jesus, to the Humanist point of view. Offerings vary throughout the year, so check back often to see which classes are meeting.
Ongoing: "Harried Reasoners"
One of our year-round groups is Harried Reasoners. This group focuses on human solutions to human issues from a skeptical, secular or humanist point of view--the good, the bad, the funny and the serious--through an active ethical and rational approach to life. Harried Reasoners meets every week after service in the Independence room which is located next to the nursery.
October 2011-May 2012: "Buddha's Brain"
This class follows the book by Rick Hanson, PhD and Richard Mendius, MD. Buddha's Brain explores the brain states that underlie the mental states of happiness, love and wisdom and how to use our minds to strengthen these positive brain states. We discuss the authors' suggestions for doing small things that lead to big changes in one's brain, share our experiences together, and support one another's efforts.
Buddha's Brain will meet twice monthly: November 13th and 27th and December 11th and 18th.
2012 dates include January 8th and 22nd, February 12th and 26th, March 11th and 25th, April 15th and 22nd, and May 6th and 27th.
