This Week's Sermon

Pam Wat, UUA Ministerial Candidate
Common Threads

A Catholic was explaining to a Unitarian Universalist friend how dogma was formulated in the Catholic Church. "First it is debated by the Church authorities. Then, when the debate is ended, whatever was decided upon is declared dogma by the Pope."

"It's pretty much the same with us," said the Unitarian Universalist.

"I thought you didn't have dogma?"

"That's because no debate among Unitarian Universalists ever ends!"

The members and friends of Pathways represent people who are politically-liberal, politically-conservative, fervent Christians, Christian-skeptics, Buddhists, tree-huggers, radicals, activists, Yankees, Texans... the list is long and the range diverse. While many of us share common threads, if you attend a committee meeting you might see that our distinguishing features are not our common threads but our differences. This year, during the last week in June, the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) held its 47th annual General Assembly in Florida with the theme of "Common Threads." Following her attendance at General Assembly this year, Pam will share news from the UUA and will explore Pathways' relationship to this larger entity.

Pathways Happenings

Pathways Summer Film Festival
Next Showing: Saturday, July 19, 7:30 p.m.

Mark the dates of July 19, and August 16 in your calendar and plan to be at Pathways for the Saturday night Summer Film Festival. The festival will raise your environmental consciousness, show you how community activism works, stimulate your mind and imagination with the mysteries of quantum physics, and inspire you with the power of forgiveness. All showings will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, July 19
The Power of Forgiveness won Best Film award at the Sun Valley Film Festival. It examines the role forgiveness can play in alleviating anger and grief after such horrific events as the Amish school shooting, as well as the physical, mental and spiritual benefits that come with forgiveness. It includes stories and interviews with people from many faith traditions: Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh; Nobel Peace Laureate Elie Wiesel on forgiveness in the Jewish faith; Azim Khamisa on forgiveness and Islam; Rev. James Forbes, pastor of Riverside Church in New York, on forgiveness from a Christian perspective. And best-selling author Thomas Moore (Care of the Soul) speaks on forgiveness from a spiritual dimension.
