This Week's Sermon

Rev. Kathy Schmitz
The Bible, The Constitution, and the DNA

Foundational documents can play an important role in our personal and communal lives. Yet, they are also open to interpretation and abuse. How can we ensure that they are used to inspire and enrich our time together?

News and Announcements

Tree of Life Plaques
Flowers are blooming, trees are in full growth, and to quote Rev. Kathy recently, our lives are birthing new possibilities -- graduations, births, and anniversaries. All of these events are excellent times to purchase a plaque on Jay's Tree of Life to honor those you celebrate.

The Congregational Care team would like to remind you that your purchase will help grow our capital campaign fund for a permanent church home. Now it's even easier to have your own plaque because we accept installment payments!

Stop by Jay's Tree of Life in the sanctuary to read the plaque inscriptions and imagine yours among them. What a beautiful way to capture your history.

Order forms are on the Pathways Web site, next to the tree in our sanctuary, or contact careteam@pathwaysUU.org. Jay's Tree of Life is managed by your Congregational Care Team, Dick Weiss and Bridget Rodewald.

Pathways Happenings

Pathways Summer Film Festival
Mark the dates of June 21, July 19, and August 16 in your calendar and plan to be at Pathways for the Saturday night Summer Film Festival. The festival will raise your environmental consciousness, show you how community activism works, stimulate your mind and imagination with the mysteries of quantum physics, and inspire you with the power of forgiveness. All showings will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, June 21
Narrated by Robert Redford and produced by The Redford Center at the Sundance Preserve and Alpheus Media, Fighting Goliath: Texas Coal Wars follows the story of Texans fighting a high-stakes battle for clean air. The film introduces the unlikely partners-mayors, ranchers, CEOs, community groups, legislators, lawyers, and citizens-that have come together to oppose the construction of 19 conventional coal-fired power plants that were slated to be built in Eastern and Central Texas and that were being fast-tracked by the Governor.

Monthly Sunday Lunch Potluck
Sunday, June 22, 2008, 12:30 p.m.

Join us for our Monthly Sunday Lunch Potluck, a time when the Pathways family comes together to share food and fellowship. We will have an opportunity to discuss church issues with Board members who are in attendance, and we will hear from the Equipping Ministry Team about their work so far and what we can expect from them in the coming church year.

Bring a dish that will serve 12 or more people according to the first letter of your last name:

A - M dessert, bread, or fruit
N - Z entree or hearty side dish

If possible, please bring extra portions of your dish, as we have been running short on food before the potlucks conclude.

Paper products, drinks and ice will be provided. Remember to bring and label your name on any serving utensils your dish will need. Additionally, label your dish it if it is not obvious what it contains and for those who may be sensitive to nuts, dairy, or other foods.

Volunteers are always welcome for setting-up and cleaning-up the potluck! Locate Bridget Rodewald on potluck day and she will happily assign tasks.

Tax Rebates and Pathways
Members and friends of Pathways Church, we have experienced tremendous generosity during this year's pledge drive and our heartfelt thanks to all! In spite of our generous giving, we have fallen short of our pledge goal and we remain in a non-sustainable deficit spending mode. With our federal government preparing to send out rebates, please consider donating your rebate to Pathways. The following link provides excellent information on this issue.

Lifespan Enrichment

Wednesday Evening Salon
The Wednesday Evening Salon happens each week, with a rotating list of events. Something exciting happens every week! Childcare reservations must be made before noon on Tuesday.

2nd Wednesday Schedule (this week):

6:00 p.m.

Sit 'N Knit
Join us in our love of making things with sticks and string. Come as you are, everyone is welcome. If you already knit, bring your project. If you want to learn, we have extra needles, practice yarn, and easy patterns to get you started. Share patterns, stitches, techniques, stories, and celebrate the finished objects.

6:30 p.m.

Brown Bag Supper

7:00 p.m.

Meditation for Children
Meditation is a wonderful tool for physical, mental, and emotional relaxation. It improves concentration and memory, enhances self-understanding and spiritual development, and helps our ability to handle stress. Parents may attend with their child(ren) so that the family can practice these simple meditation techniques together.

7:00 p.m.

Buddhist Reflections
Sessions begin and end with meditation and include background material as well an opportunity for discussion of practical applications of Buddhist teachings. Sessions will evolve and be balanced to meet the needs to the group. Beginners to both meditation and Buddhism are welcome. Drop-ins are welcome. Open to adults and high school students.

7:00 p.m.

Mah Jongg
If you like to play cards, this is a lot more fun, and a bit more challenging - about as challenging as Sudoku (not as challenging as bridge). There is no betting or score keeping. There will, however, be fun and good people! Beginners are welcome, as are adults and teens.
