This Week's Sermon

Standing on the Side of Love

Rev. Kathy Schmitz

Serving in Massachusett s, Rev. Kathy was active in the struggle for equal marriage rights in the years leading up to the legal recognition of same-sex marriage. Since that recognition, 4 years ago this weekend, she has had the honor of officiating at 20 legal weddings for same-sex couples. This morning she shares her reflections on that journey and on why full marriage equality is a matter of importance for spiritual communities.

News and Announcements

Ministerial Search Committee News

Our year long search for a new settled minister is rapidly coming to an end. PathwaysChurch has been delighted this year to have Kathy Schmitz as our advocate, cheerleader, teacher, mentor, and interim minister. She will continue serving as our interim minister through late July. After that time, she will move on to her next interim minister position.

The Ministerial Search Committee announced last week that it had found a wonderful candidate to be put forward to be the next settled minister of PathwaysChurch. His name is Rev. Tony Lorenzen. You can learn more about Tony at his website www.revtonylorenzen.com.

Tony, wife Tina, and son Zach will be with us the week of June 1 - 8 for candidating week. Tony will be in the pulpit on both of those Sundays and will be attending Pathways functions scheduled throughout that week. Mark your calendar now and plan on attending one or more of the events so that you get the opportunity to get to know Tony and his family. The schedule for candidating week will be posted soon.

After the service on June 8th the congregation members will meet to vote on calling Tony Lorenzen to be our settled minister. If called, Tony would begin his work with PathwaysChurch on September 15th.

During the month of August and early September our wonderful Worship Network Team will see that our pulpit is filled each Sunday.

Assistance Needed This Sunday for Lunch Clean Up

Fun & Fellowship needs assistance with cleaning up after the Congregational Meeting this Sunday. It takes about 30 minutes for 5-7 people to assist with stowing tables and chairs, taking out trash and putting away serving items. Find Bridget Rodewald if you have time after the meeting to assist with the necessary tasks.

Tax Rebates and Pathways

Members and friends of PathwaysChurch, we have experienced tremendous generosity during this year's pledge drive and our heartfelt thanks to all! In spite of our generous giving, we have fallen short of our pledge goal and we remain in a non-sustainable deficit spending mode. With our federal government preparing to send out rebates, please consider donating your rebate to Pathways. Pathways Happenings

Welcoming Congregation Movie Night

For The Bible Tells Me So

THIS Saturday, May 17, 7:00 p.m.

Can the love between two people ever be an abomination? Is the chasm separating gays and lesbians and Christianity too wide to cross? Is the Bible an excuse to hate? Through the experiences of five very normal, very Christian, very American families -- including those of former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt and Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson -- we discover how insightful people of faith handle the realization of having a gay child. Informed by such respected voices as Bishop Desmond Tutu, Harvard's Peter Gomes, Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg and Reverend Jimmy Creech, FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO offers healing, clarity and understanding to anyone caught in the crosshairs of scripture and sexual identity.

Please join Pathways Welcoming Congregation on Saturday, May 17 at 7:00 pm for this Movie Night of the multiple award-winning For The Bible Tells Me So from Producer/Director/Writer Daniel Karslake.

Meditation for Children - CANCELED 5/14/08

Meditation is a wonderful tool for physical, mental, and emotional relaxation. It improves concentration and memory, enhances self-understanding and spiritual development, and helps our ability to handle stress. Parents may attend with their child(ren) so that the family can practice these simple meditation techniques together.

7:00 p.m.

Buddhist Reflections

Sessions begin and end with meditation and include background material as well an opportunity for discussion of practical applications of Buddhist teachings. Sessions will evolve and be balanced to meet the needs to the group. Beginners to both meditation and Buddhism are welcome. Drop-ins are welcome. Open to adults and high school students.

7:00 p.m.

Mah Jongg

If you like to play cards, this is a lot more fun, and a bit more challenging - about as challenging as Sudoku (not as challenging as bridge). There is no betting or score keeping. There will, however, be fun and good people! Beginners are welcome, as are adults and teens.

New Family Accommodations During Common Ground

A space with chairs and child-friendly diversions is available outside the Sanctuary window next to the DRE's office during Common Ground. If your child needs a break, please feel free to use this space. We're working toward making sound available to this area so you can hear the service clearly, and hope to have this done in the next few weeks.

Community News

Roy Zimmerman in Concert

What's funny about war, poverty, ignorance, bigotry, neo-conservatism, homophobia, greed, lust, and fear? Ask Roy Zimmerman. He's been writing satirical songs for twenty years. He founded and wrote all the material for the satirical folk quartet The Foremen, who recorded for Warner/Reprise throughout the Nineties. Tom Lehrer says, "I congratulate Roy Zimmerman on reintroducing literacy to comedy songs. And the rhymes actually rhyme, they don't just rhyne." Joni Mitchell says, "Roy's lyrics move beyond poetry and achieve perfection." He's currently touring a one-man show called Faulty Intelligence. It's a ninety-minute theatrical presentation of Zimmerman's original songs and comic commentary.
